The 3rd Foot (The Doddies) after heavy losses have been withdrawn to
Fort Day, one of the three new massive defence networks now guarding
the BoldlyGo Homeland.  Fort Morrow recently saw a visit from
Brigadier Bromley-Pugh who gave the defenders a pep talk and left them
with their tails up especially the cavalry squadrons. 
At the same time the Chief of the General Staff Field Marshal Sir
Gordon Bennet officially opened Fort Night, the third and last defence
site. He was reported to have said that everything seemed ship shape
and it could take anything that was thrown at it.
Strong Arizonian and Acanthopis forces continue to mass at the
frontier, however, the BoldlyGo plan of quick and effective switching
of units between the forts should repulse multiple attacks if
required.

Ssssssilly human. You don't want to switch between forts; that's when
the sssssnakes will bite your toes. I don't know if Field Marshal Sir
Gordon Bennet noticed, but some of the men aren't wearing their
regulation bootses.

And cavalry versus a writhing mass of us snakeys? You're the war
planner, I suppose, but a fire brigade might have more luck than a
herd of sssssspookey horses.

You should talk to the Porcupines. They like you, and they know a lot
more about animals than an army trained to fight Prussians.

But, Field Marshal, if we don't take you alive then you won't *taste*
good. Eating dead stuff is gross. Once it's clear that you're lost,
you're not going to waste perfectly good meat by shooting yourself,
are you? That's crazy talk. Let me know if there is anything that my
snake army can do--money sent to widows, scholarship funds in your
name, a promise to show up en masse at the home of a particularly
annoying girl from grade school, whatever--let me know. We'll go to
great lengths to avoid the spoilage of our meals.

Here's a thought: what if we promise not to attempt to extract any
secrets from you. We'll just swallow you right up, no questions asked.
