My old friend Baldwin seems to have eaten something he shouldn't. I am sending my best physician to him. It is time to reintroduce myself. I am the Khan of a poor people. Nomads, all of us. Simple goat herders and horse riders. We value peace above all else. My only wish is to grow old and fat beside the fire. Any rumors you may have heard about our ruthlessness are entirely fiction. All of the towns and cities that we now rule have opened their gates to us, desiring the peace that we bring to them. We are tolerant of all beliefs and creeds and welcome all who want to join with us. We look forward to a peaceful coexistence with our neighbors and the exchange of ideas to the mutual benefit of all. Is the world not a glorious place? Insha'Allah, with peace continuing in all corners of creation, there will be unrivaled prosperity for all. But come, Tiramakhan, you look glum. This is not a world where there is joy in being a General, O Great King. With the landworks ended and improvements only being made in unnamed distant territories, the men grow bored and soft. Peace is everywhere. Even Mongol hordes desire only trade. What of this infidel king Baldwin? Can you not focus your efforts upon him? He has already declared war upon us. Baldwin sleeps, Wise One. Baldwin is a crazed despot pursuing a fantasy, but his advisors do not heed him and so we do not think him a threat. We now have more armies in Manden than he has in his entire nation. This would be an inglorious thing, to slaughter such a nation based only upon the ravings of a dying leader. So if we will not move against Baldwin, what do you propose? Are you wed to the edict against alcohol, Your Eminence? I do not appreciate your jests, General. Then can we not search out alliances? In these diplomatic doldrums, I do fear a concerted attack. Can this be done? I expect alliances have all been made by now. We have shunned or ignored all comers. Great King, I ask only that we abandon our current stance of forming no alliances. I do not ask that you send out diplomats, but if others are to inquire, I ask only that we not turn them away. Peace is boring, and one day we shall have need of alliances. Very well, General. Let it be done. But I fear none will come asking.
