We were doing the "viral fugue" over here (first one of the kids gets it, then another one, then it's our turn; same things all over again...) Everyone now has "immediate" message capability so we can have the discussion in real-time. -- Moderator ====================================================================== PE-07-Diplo [07-Independents]: And the Prizes Go To... (This is intended to protect the privacy of other players.) ====================================================================== In the beginning, 14 Leaders took to the field, for the first ever Power's Edge Tournament. In the end, Power's Edge had become Webs of Power, and 7 Leaders tended to their personal Webs. Let History Show That: 1) Fluffy Duckie dominated the world with the Most Regions (31), Most Units (1048), and Most Production (92). The Duckie's sealed their win by repelling an endgame-invasion from 2Cool and then thrashing him back, and gained further with a surprise conquest of several of Scorpion's "No Fly Zones"! (Presumably the ducks went in amphibiously instead.) But the Ducks had to hold off a last-ditch surge from Small Fish (jumping to 30 / 807 / 85 with a last-minute invasion of just about everyone, including his ally Gordon, and nearly winning it except for losing a critical last-trun ), and Frodo (25 /992 / 78). Still, things were not as close as they appeared, since the Ducks dominated the stats for most of the second half... 2) Superthing dominated in production per region (3.6), saving his best for last while giving ground to a determined invasion by the numerically-weaker Gordon. 3) Superthing dominated in the defensive categories: 78.6 units/region, and 21.7 units/production (where he tied with 2Cool). As for best diplomacy and roleplaying ... a lot of folks did a good job of building characters, but some delivered higher entertainment value ... what do you all think??? -- Moderator P.S. For those following the U.S. Super Bowl: Go Giants!!! (Can't stand "perfect" teams and gotta love the underdog here; plus I have a Giants pillow that came my way from some relatives in New York...) ====================================================================== PE-07-Diplo [Scorpion]: Great game all! Hope to see you all return in one form or another! Duckie! Congrats on the victory stats! Who'd have thought that that first encounter, that that first meeting and establishment of peaceful No Fly Zones would prove so important!!! An explanation for those who don't know what happened when Fluffy Duckie took over the No Fly Zones... He and Skunk Works had cooperated on the initial formation of the No Fly Zone concept; part of that concept included no forceful occupations or attacks from a No Fly Zone. Another part of the concept was that neither signatory of the No Fly Zone claimed 'true' ownership of them. Therefore, nearing the end of the Universe, Fluffy Duckie was granted stewardship of the No Fly Zones until further notice... So, no amphibious assault was necessary; this was a diplomatic transfer! It is interesting that this peaceful maneuver actually solidified the Duck's military dominance... Congrats also to Superthing for capturing the other three leader positions! Frodo; yes, with the recent announcement from Peter Jackson and New Line, there will indeed be another appearance of Gandalf! While I had put the costume away after August (I went to a wedding reception in costume; it was for a guy I met in line for Return of the King, who later happen to become on of my daughters Jodo sensei) and gotten a hair cut and beard trim - but there's awhile yet before The Hobbit, so I'll have most of it back! :-) Heck, he may even have something to say in a future Universe too! :-) If anyone is interested, the Moderator just might be able to send you a picture of Gandalf, although he spoke only to Frodo in this Universe!) Gordon; well met - there was a lot of fun banter, and a lot of mistrust on both sides... It made for a fun dynamic! Beware, one of the leaders is truly malevolent, while the other is a man of his words! Even I don't know which is which yet - maybe...) (And, since I intend to continue these characters into Tournament 2008 I'm not sure I want to totally give up my anonymity at this time! :-) But, for those who were involved in the WTWT, the smilies *might* be a give away... :-) :-) :-) ) Regarding the best role play - easily the DNi Empire had the inside track early in the Universe. While attempting to play off of his role play, and use characters he created and then 'lent' to other nations, ultimately led to a great deal of subterfuge on my part (the whole Tianna search - honestly, it was just a red herring, there was never any intention of finding anything; I couldn't think of a way to do it without violating the rules!) However, that simple transfer of a single unit, giving a name and rank, allowed so much diversity in role playing that I hope someone has the audacity to do it again... Unfortunately, however, the DNi leader didn't understand the rules properly and was reprimanded for sending messages appearing to be from another leader and for speaking in code. The Moderator was also reprimanded for his part in this debacle! Due to playing a little lose with the rules (using DNi characters that had been transfered to my control in diplomatic messages, but only back to DNi - except later with Tianna) I also put myself up for appraisal... Luckily, having played games with Bob the Moderator for many years, I was skirting the rules without actually breaking them - I mention this only as a reminder to Bob; this either should be addressed in the Rules as a No-No, or have some kind of write up on how to do this without breaking the rules!!! (I hope that doesn't sound like volunteering!!! :-) ) It wasn't long after that that the nation of DNi disappeared, which was to bad - I was really enjoying the diplomacy! So, if a leader that was able to finish needs to be chosen, I easily feel that Frodo had the next best role play! He kept it fun, stayed in character, and was able to converse on various levels - depending upon who was talking to (Kelly J., Gandalf, or The Dissident) he remained true to his role play! ijb; the REAL leader of Skunk Works... ====================================================================== PE-07-Diplo [Fluffy Duckie]: haha Date:Tue, 05 Feb 2008 18:55:34 +0000 To reply, log in at http://www.websofpower.com/?Page=Login or use your newspaper form. Good to chat with you--it's been a long time! I agree that D'Ni was a great roleplay, as was yours, though yours was fairly dangerous. I came very close to attacking you on several occasions because the only rationale I could imagine for your dissident was to have an excuse to break out of your agreements. I always pulled back at the last minute, and am glad that I did, but things were touch-and-go there for a bit. Same with Small Fish and Gordon. I made the decision to use their leaked message as an excuse to invade, and set up the attack. My thinking was that they were both overextended from their recent acquisitions, and if I was going to stop Small Fish I had to do it quickly. After talking with Gordon, I backed down, and at the time wasn't really sure if it was a good idea. I always expected those two to collude more than they did, but I decided to trust Gordon's assurances that he wouldn't let Small Fish move uncontested into his territories. Now I'm glad that I decided not to attack, because that line always had a high chance of handing the victory to Hobbit, but I was nervous throughout the game. At the end, I set up some invasion points to attack Small Fish if he started to make a move on Gordon or me. I didn't have enough units to defend everywhere (as Small Fish found), and so I decided not to defend against an attack from Gordon. On the last turn, my biggest fear was Small Fish moving into Gordon territory and Gordon moving into mine. That, or a concerted effort between Hobbits, Gordon, and Fish to all attack and let the chips land where they may. I have played with Hobbit before, and knew that you can usually trust him, so I didn't worry too much about those borders, though I was reinforcing them pretty solidly at the end. Hobbit's presence in the game was one of the factors that kept me from being more aggressive--Hobbit is always a large nation and can usually punish aggressors pretty handily. I had not for a minute expected that Superthing had been Boldly--clearly he is more perceptive than I! I still don't know why he never asked before attacking my one region, but that worked out well for me in the end, because the fight between Superthing and Gordon never seemed to get very far. I felt a little bit bad about not attacking him after his move, because it wasn't very nice to Gordon for me to allow Superthing to move through my territory like that, but at the time, even though Gordon and I were friends by then, I felt like it wouldn't hurt to have someone to keep him busy. Plus, I kind of liked Superthing even though i didn't understand him. The biggest curve came when TooCool attacked me. As it turned out, this was a great opportunity. I had defended one of the regions where he attacked, and was moving units through the other. That worked nicely, because it allowed me to appear more prepared than I was. I assumed that it was the start of a concerted attack, but got lucky in my counter-attack in that TooCool still had his units rather dispersed. That let me pick up some of the regions that I needed in the end. This was good, because I was at that point again eyeing Small Fish and wondering if I should break our tentative cease-fire and pick up some regions near the end. I think I would have gotten creamed if I had done that, but it was tempting. Anyway, that was longer than I had anticipated. But that's what was going on in my mind. Bye the way, will there be an announcement when the 2008 tournament starts, or have I already missed it? ====================================================================== PE-07-Diplo [Scorpion]: Regarding anonymity and Ducks Date:Tue, 05 Feb 2008 20:43:23 +0000 To reply, log in at http://www.websofpower.com/?Page=Login or use your newspaper form. Direct email replies do not go to the sender. (This is intended to protect the privacy of other players.) ====================================================================== Hey Duckie... Yeah, regarding that whole anonymity thing - I only said I didn't want to *totally* give it up; this being one of Bob's creations, I couldn't help but mention the WTWT... And, since pretty much everybody in that Tournament had to deal with me at one time or another, the smilies and the mention should have given it away... For those who weren't, I don't think I gave away to much... :-) :-) :-) When this Universe started, my only intention was to play the entire thing out (as I mentioned to several during the game, I had no intention of trying to win; finishing was the win for me...) But, as the Universe developed, so did my vision of how I wanted to run my empire... The idea of competing Leaders was developed specifically due to an 'oops' on my part; but eventually matured to where The Dissident made his play for power before, during, and after the Christmas break! It was incredibly difficult to allow my forces to go for so long Leaderless - and I was starting to get pretty worried that the public announcement of my nation being leaderless would come to late... (The was also a tense period because I knew I was setting myself up for invasion when it happened!) Now, I have some further ideas for Tournament 2008; both Kelly and the Dissident will be back! :-) (Regarding that - the signup for Tournament 2008 *is* available now - The Dissident will began holding the reins of Skunk Works...) Just as an FYI; I was almost always prepared for your invasion... However, I wanted to keep the No Fly Zone concept in it's pure form - so massed defenses were typically nearby! :-) While it was against my better judgement not to launch attacks from the NFZs on occasion (and I was especially worried about the forced No Fly Zone area I took from Gordon; that was going to be a massive problem if Gordon had accepted it!) I stuck to my guns and didn't use them offensively... Handing them over to you at the end (I was hoping that message got leaked!) was the pinnacle use of the No Fly Zones, and I was happy it worked out the way it did! Come on all - whether you retain your nation or start another, get signed up; there are only four leaders so far...
