(This is intended to protect the privacy of other players.) ====================================================================== I'm assuming that we're back to Bargle-Goth vs. Mendeleev-Heeter, with Ivan waiting for a chance to join in at some point? How soon should we restart the great battles? Bargle, I'm glad to hear you've decided to stay with us. Our community is not so large, and I think I speak for all when I say we'd love to have you stay with us. (Some of us have known each other for 14-16 years now, mainly via this game and the old Warlords game, with a few face-to-face meetings over the ages...) With that said... I look forward to battling your nation again soon! Bring it on! (But, I'd like to suggest a 2- to 4- turn quiet period so everyone can point their armies back to the combat frontiers... Although I'd be comfortable starting the war up at any time, I confess that a lot of my troops have gotten turned around, marching back and forth towards Ivan, then Goth, then Ivan... and they could use a chance to prime their weapons...) Meanwhile, Bargle was asking how Karameikos (or anyone) could possibly achieve the required Individual Victory in the other Universe. Perhaps some of our other veterans could speak up as well, but here are some of my thoughts. First, it's rare for a Universe to end in less than 100 turns except through an Alliance victory. With Individual Victory rules, nations that leap to an early lead are not necessarily destined to win (even if well-led), because the combined power of the other nations remains formidable, and the largest nation tends to attract enemies! But the winning leader doesn't need 70 percent of the regions. He just needs 50 percent of the "interconnected" nations regions... and has to be at least 50 percent larger than the next-largest nation. In practice, this could be met if one player had 25 regions, another had 16, and a third had 8. The winner would then have 25 out of 49 total. It gets harder to meet these conditions in a world with many players, so I suspect there will be a bit of an endurance contest. And those seeking to win may have to bump off a few others and convince them that to return would be futile! Because otherwise, players who get wiped out can choose to return (under new names, even), and if they regrow rapidly enough, we might not have an official winner for a very long time. But that would be wonderful, because the joy of the game is in the great battles and entertaining diplomacy, and no one wants the fun to end while the other players still have fight left in them! Although, that reminds me, perhaps we should establish a new metric indicating a given leader's "historical importance"... how many turns each leader has been "in the lead"? How many hostile units have been slain? How many of his own units he has sacrificed?? Hmmm... I think I just need to open my steam vent! I'll have more of a think about your broader issue of victory conditions etc. and send another message. Just to let folks know who might not have guessed, I've been away from WoP for a number of years, but in my earlier incarnations I was "Justinian of the Roman Empire" in Trials of Creation for Power's Edge, and before that was Lord Amaranth / Wat Tyler throughout the Warlords II world tournament (Rounds A all the way to F), so you can count me amount the grizzled veterans, relapsed :) Cheers, Barry/Bargle/Karameikos/Justinian/Wat/Amaranth WP-PF-Diplo [HeeterBob II]: Need to change my strategy now Date:Fri, 28 Jan 2011 05:36:41 +0000 To reply, log in at http://www.websofpower.com/?Page=Login or use your newspaper form. I need to change my strategy now! (Somehow I'd convinced myself that the role of Mendeleev was being played by Barry, and thinking that, I felt like I had a secret weapon as my ally... The nation whose map is featured on the Webs of Power homepage was, IMHO, one of Barry's crowning achievements, not to discount his many real-world accomplishments...) So, I'm me, and Ivan is Ivan, and Barry is Bargle, and Goth is a very generous non-former-Warlord whom I've come to greatly enjoy playing with and against... That leaves Mendeleev? Judging by email addresses (sorry, I just had to peek in the database tonight)... you might be a friend of Barry's? (And if not, you might be pleased to know you appear to live in the same country?) Actually, this is better. I'd much rather be beating up * Barry * than someone I haven't properly "met" yet... And I'd much rather be allies with someone I haven't played with before, and share the joy of this game... One more thing -- Barry, if you look carefully, you'll find your old friend Little Puppy in the TV Universe, and Ivan is there as well. I don't think any other former Warlords are there, but you might find a few others from your earlier days here in Webs of Power. Although we're a small gaming world, at least we attract really smart, talented and very cool people (well, other than me)... :) WP-PF-Diplo [Bargle]: Re: Need to change my strategy Date:Fri, 28 Jan 2011 07:19:56 +0000 To reply, log in at http://www.websofpower.com/?Page=Login or use your newspaper form. (This is intended to protect the privacy of other players.) ====================================================================== Well, after I wandered away from WoP and Warlords II had died its natural death (I never really did get into Warlords III), I went off and ran the Neverwinter Nights persistent world "Mystara" for a few years as a (then Head) DM and developer: http://goo.gl/Xj2C5 After that finished up, I was at a loose end, so was happy to find WoP still going strong. I was just aggrieved with the region chaos that my plans for utter world domination were being constrained - I'm too much of a dog on a stretched leash when it comes to wargames! Not sure who Medeleev is, but fun to think he's also an Aussie. Oh, and my idle guesses are that Ivan is Queen Eliz, Goth is Red Claw, Dave/Little Puppy is Temujin, and you, Bob, are Air Marshall. Could be totally wrong, of course :)
